In the wild almost all fish eat some form of vegetable matter, even primarily carnivorous fish. Unfortunately, most prepared fish foods don't have nearly enough vegetable matter in them to provide fish proper nutrition. This is were feeding your fish vegetables comes in handy.
Some fruits/veggies that are safe for fish and inverts are peas, carrots, Lima beans, green beans, corn, sweet potatoes, bananas, raspberries, and cucumber. Zucchini, lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, broccoli, and radish leaves are also great.y appreciated. Try to stay away from rhubarb and onions.
I prepare my vegetables by blanching them. Blanching is placing the veggies in water and bringing it to a boil. Once the water starts boiling, you should remove the hot water and replace it with cool water. You can do this by placing the veggies in a microwave safe cup and microwaving them until the water boils
Peas are my favorite food to feed fish, especially goldfish. They are probably the easiest to prepare and fish love them. The peas should be blanched and then the shell should be removed. To remove the shell of the pea, just pinch and pull. Inside the shell there is two halves. You should chop the halves until they are small enough to fit into the fish's mouth. When placed in the aquarium they should sink. Peas act as a natural laxative helping with constipation. I would recommend feeding them at least once a week, especially if you are keeping fancy goldfish.Corn and Lima beans can be prepared essentially the same way.
Zucchini is great food for sucker fish such as otocinclus and plecos. To prepare zucchini (cucumbers and other similar squash/veggies an be prepared the same way) you must first slice it into pieces of your desired thickness. Obviously, if you have a lot of fish, you will want a thicker slice and thinner for less fish. I leave the seeds and skin as some fish like them, but you may remove them if you wish. I usually blanch the zucchini, although it is perfectly fine raw as well. Sometimes it floats, and sometimes it sinks. To anchor it down, you can wedge it under a heavy object, or put it in a seaweed clip. Remove leftovers in 12-24 hours.
Lettuce and other leafy greens make great foods for snails. I generally rinse the leaves and just float them in the tank, but you can weigh them down if you wish. Snails find their way to the lettuce and quickly devour it. If you are trying to remove snails, lettuce is a great way to do it.
Feeding your fish fresh fruits and vegetables is actually quite easy and can be done by anyone. It is a great way to provide your fish with a treat and extra nutrition. It may take a few tries before the fish realize it is food, but once they get ahold of it, they'll enjoy their feedings!
